Memoirs + more

Farfisa organ: Think B52s, certain Pink Floyd songs, Elvis Costello, Elton John… It’s a singular sound that can take a song in an entirely different direction than it’s original skeleton would suggest…

On Aug 1st I released a new tune called “Memoir” – a song about dusting oneself off after mistakes, life changes & lessons learned …
The song is available on BandCamp NOW &
will be on streaming platforms, but not yet …

I, like other lifelong singer/songwriter/recording artists, have felt the pinch & burn of the ‘new model;’ and the ‘death of the working class musician.’  With that in mind, some of my new singles and future albums may show up on BandCamp or other alternative music sites exclusively, for a time or in perpetuity in some cases.  A platform like BandCamp supports creators like myself, and has a great interface that true patrons of the arts (you?!) can visit & truly get behind the artists & the songs that they love.  All this is to say: Head over to http://ryanmcmahon.bandcamp.com & listen to “Memoir” – produced by yours truly & the great Steve Dawson & the Henhouse PopUp Gang.

NOW that we’ve got that housekeeping out of the way… I’m back.
I completed a 5 week tour of Western Canada way back in Feb/Mar/Apr, and took some time to write, rest up and regroup.
If you’re reading this, you’ve listened to one or more of my songs at some point, and I’m here today to say that I’m feeling a bit of a prolific wave coming on…. I have another studio session coming up this October, and have several new songs to commit to.  If you’ve seen me recently, there have been subtle changes to my live setup: I’m playing more electric these days, and reimagining some old songs with it. It’s making me a better player, and causing me to write more & take more chances.  I’ll never fancy myself a soloist/shredder type of player, but despite that, I’m starting to be able to execute little riffs & changes that I wasn’t able to on an acoustic before.  Simply having another instrument onstage gives the show a new dynamic.  Things feel fresh again.  I’m still playing solo, and as a duo, but there are band shows in the works for the fall & into the new year.  I’d really like to make some racket again…

That’s it for now…  I’m off to rehearse for a nice gig this Saturday – full band – a few hundred folks, under the beautiful summer skies of Lantzville BC at Superior Farm.  Thank you Thank you for following along.
